Sugar Daddy Hedwig – A truly loveable and flirtatious chatacter

Sugar Daddy Hedwig, is a song that is sung by the character Hedwig, in the popular Broadway musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Sugar Daddy Hedwig is one of the most popular songs in the show and has earned its own loyal supporters, who both love the song ‘Sugar Daddy’ and the loveable, cross dressing character of Hedwig.

The original Sugar Daddy Hedwig appeared in the 1998 musical of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The story revolves around the fictional rock band, who is fronted by crossdressing Hedwig, who is from East Germany. This show caused quite a storm when it first went live over nearly 20 years ago, due to its political nature and blurring of gender. The original script was by John Cameron Mitchell, while the musical composition and lyrics were devised by Stephen Trask. Today this musical has a strong cult following, very much like that of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was even made into a film back in 2001, named Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Sugar Daddy Hedwig – the song

This song is a lot of fun, it is flirtatious and fantastic to dance to. You just can’t help but to move your feet. However, there is an undercurrent of serious political issues that underline this song. There are many political references to Communist Germany and the divide that is seen between them and the Western World. The lyrics clearly show Hedwig’s feelings, in that he is fearful of living in a communist society where violence prevails. All he wants to do is to be happy and live the great American Dream.

2014 saw the emergence of a modern and new age Hedwig, in the form of Hollywood superstar, Neil Patrick Harris taking to the lead role. When he performed with the rest of the cast at the 2014 Tony Awards, he quite literally stole the show, engaging with audience members such as Kevin Bacon and Sting. He also pulled his husband from the audience so as to give him a kiss”! This was a fun and rather naughty Hedwig that entertained the audience.
